Religious Organization Audit Specialists — VA, MD & DC

Church & Religious Organization Financial Audit Services — DC, Maryland & Virginia

Churches and religious organizations in DC, Maryland, and Virginia need financial audits for multiple reasons: major donors increasingly require audited financials before large gifts; denominations (Baptist conventions, UMC annual conferences, Assemblies of God districts) require annual audits or reviews for affiliated congregations; organizations receiving federal grants for community development, housing, or social services must have a Single Audit if federal spending exceeds $1,000,000 (raised from $750,000 effective for fiscal years beginning on or after October 1, 2024); and an independent audit is one of the most effective protections against embezzlement — which studies show is most prevalent in religious organizations. Your Virtual CPA provides professional, discreet audit services for congregations of all sizes and faiths.

Are churches and religious organizations required to have financial audits?

Churches are not legally required to have audits unless they receive federal grants exceeding $1,000,000 (triggering a Single Audit) or their denomination mandates it. However, audits are strongly recommended because religious organizations are the #1 target for employee fraud according to ACFE studies, and major donors increasingly require audited financials before making significant gifts.

    Form 990
IRS Form 990 is the annual information return filed by most tax-exempt organizations. While most churches are exempt from filing, religious organizations that accept federal grants, have significant unrelated business income, or choose to file must submit Form 990. The form is publicly available and reviewed by major donors, watchdog sites like Charity Navigator, and grant-making foundations.
    Single Audit
A Single Audit under OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200) is required for any organization expending $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year. Churches accepting HUD community development grants, FEMA disaster relief funds, or other federal program funds that exceed this threshold must comply.

Church & Religious Organization Audit Services

From annual financial statement audits to Single Audits for federal grant recipients, we provide discreet, professional audit services for faith communities of all sizes.

    Annual Financial Statement Audit

Independent CPA audit of your church or ministry's financial statements — providing the highest level of assurance for your board, congregation, and donors. We audit all accounts including tithes and offerings, restricted funds, building funds, benevolence funds, and program expenses. Our opinion letter can be shared with major donors, grant-makers, and denominational leadership.

    Denominational Audit Requirements

Many denominations require affiliated congregations to submit annual audited or reviewed financial statements to their district, conference, or convention. We understand the requirements of major denominations including United Methodist Church (UMC), Baptist conventions, Presbyterian Church (USA), Assemblies of God, Catholic diocesan requirements, and independent evangelical networks.

Single Audit for Federal Grant Recipients

Churches and faith-based organizations receiving $1,000,000+ in federal grants (HUD Community Development Block Grants, FEMA reimbursements, Head Start, SBA loans) must have a Single Audit under OMB Uniform Guidance. We perform the full Single Audit including SEFA preparation, major program testing, and Federal Audit Clearinghouse submission.

    Financial Review (Alternative to Audit)

A financial statement review provides limited assurance at lower cost than a full audit. Many smaller congregations and some denominational requirements accept a review. We can assess whether a review meets your specific requirements — donor expectations, denominational standards, or regulatory needs — and provide a recommendation.

    Internal Controls & Fraud Prevention

Religious organizations are the single largest category of fraud victims in ACFE studies, with median losses of $120,000+ per incident. As part of our audit, we evaluate your church's offering counting procedures, check-signing controls, bank reconciliation practices, and credit card policies — and provide a management letter with specific recommendations to reduce fraud risk.

    First Church Audit

Many congregations have never had an independent audit and don't know where to start. We guide your leadership through every step: what financial records to organize, how to prepare your chart of accounts, what documentation is needed for restricted funds, and how to communicate the audit process to your board and congregation.
